Conference Announcement — The French Revolution and the Sacred
Dear students and colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the international conference *“The French Revolution and the Sacred: Global and Contemporary Perspectives (18th c. – present)”*, jointly hosted by *Princeton University* and *Sciences Po*. Bringing together scholars from history, political theory, and related disciplines, this conference explores the complex and evolving relationship between the French Revolution and the concept of the sacred—both in the revolutionary period itself and in its long-term global legacy.
Across two locations and four days, the program features panels on:
– The sacred in revolutionary political culture – Religion and sovereignty – Counter-revolutionary thought – Colonial and global reappropriations of the Revolution – Nineteenth-century transformations and memory – The (de)sacralization of the Revolution in modern historiography and politics – (…)
Keynote lectures include:
– *Charly Coleman (Columbia University)* — *Money and Martyrs: Economic Theology in the French Revolution *(Princeton session, *May 15*) – *David A. Bell (Princeton University)* — *The Sacralization of Nature in Eighteenth-Century France *(Sciences Po session, *May 26*)
The conference also features a roundtable on *“Jacobinism, Past and Present” *in Paris, with *Côme Simien* (Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne), *Guillaume Roubaud-Quashie* (Université Bourgogne Europe) and *Stéphanie Roza *(CNRS/Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne), on *May 27 *in Paris.
