What would it mean to imagine, theorize, and do a geological otherwise in the wake of planetary exhaustion? In this project I attempt at finding the cues for a non-extractivist geology —or a geology thought and practiced outside the limits of resource capitalism and its sustaining geophilosophies.
And I do so ethnographically in Curarrehue, a mountain territory in southern Chile where Indigenous and campesino communities have co-habited with cordillera for millennia.
In Curarrehue, cordillera means “cordillera” or mountain range, but also a constellation of beings, feelings and relations that exceed conventional geological definitions. Spending time with farmers and shepherds, I speculate about the possibilities of thinking cordillera as a geological theory, and about assuming wild boar hunting, doing veranadas and gold searching, among other practices for inhabiting and knowing the cordillera, as geological methods.
Finally, I argue that the onto-political power of a cordillera geology does not rest on its capacity to replace other geologies, nor even to stop extractivism, but on rendering knowledge and the geos as unfinished, open-ended process.
