Bien cordialement,

Call for Chapter Proposals: Cultural Histories of the Grand Hotel
This proposed collection will bring together scholars of the modern hotel in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia, and the Americas, to explore the cultural history of the institution from c. 1875 to 1950. The contributors will share expertise in the field, and an innovative approach to the historical study of the hotel as a site that is at once locally grounded and globally networked. Each author will develop an historical case study of a landmark urban ‘grand hotel’ and systematically explore how the establishment related: (1) to its specific setting, as expressed in its built form, clienteles, and functions; and (2) to a wider, global ‘hotel culture’, signalled by its architectural style, technologies, and amenities, and by flows of people, capital, and ideas associated with it.
Overall, this collection will foster dialogue amongst global scholars about the meaning of the hotel during the apotheosis of the Age of the Grand Hotel. It will argue that a transnational framework for the study of hotels and modernity can deepen our understanding of sites that were at once profoundly grounded in local circumstances and part of fast-flowing, global networks of people and capital. It will advance the vibrant field of hotel history and signal the critical importance of comparative studies for understanding the importance of the hotel on the modern urban landscape.
This collection is designed to be global in scope and historical in approach. We seek proposals for the historical study of specific grand hotels, including but not limited to Europe, that fit the framework of this analysis, and which will encourage deep interdisciplinary engagement. Please forward a short, 400-word proposal, along with a 250-word biography and a short list of five, recent representative publications, by 30 September 2023 to: kjames@uoguelph.ca
